The Concept of Mobility in Architecture

The concept of mobile is used to mean that it can be moved, transported and disassembled. Therefore, we can use the concept of mobile space for any space with these features.

Mobile Space and Grounded Belonging

The understanding of mobile space, which is becoming more and more widespread, is once again transforming the relationships that people establish with the place, starting with urbanization and extending to the present. When we look at history, we know that groups of people who lead a nomadic, hunter-gatherer life and are less dependent on the ground compared to today's people, started to establish cities with the learning of food storage and the realization of surplus value production. In this process, their belonging to the place and their dependence increased.

Today, thanks to the constantly and rapidly developing information and communication technologies, more flexible working and life styles are emerging. In particular, the digitalization of education and working life has led to the concept of "mobile space" by reducing spatial stability. We can think of mobile space as the spatial representation of the current nomadic lifestyle, which is becoming increasingly widespread thanks to digital technologies and adopts movement and dynamism as a principle.

Opportunities of Mobile Space Concept

Mobile space offers fast and practical solutions to the changing needs of people in many areas. As an example of these solutions, we can think of the rapid creation of temporary spaces during the climate crisis we are living, mobile solutions to the problem of inadequate patient beds due to the sudden spread of Covid-19, and solutions that are put forward periodically for cultural and economic reasons.

The Future of Mobile Space

We have realized once again the importance of our connection with nature and people, and our freedom of movement, by experiencing processes where we cannot leave our homes, stay away from social life and nature during the pandemic process. With the reflections of this awareness on architecture, it is not difficult to predict that the use of mobile structures that can move and can be assembled and disassembled will become increasingly widespread. We will continue to learn about the possibilities offered by an architecture that looks at production and development from this perspective.

This month, you can take a closer look at mobile architecture with our tiny house examples in the Click! magazine.
