The House at the End of the World: What Would It Be Like to Live in Antarctica?

Imagine… The temperature is far below zero outside, powerful winds are blowing, and an endless white landscape stretches as far as the eye can see. There is no city, street, or trace of the everyday life we are accustomed to. If you had to design a building in such a place, where would you begin?

Kuryłowicz + Architects took on exactly this challenge while designing the Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Research Station in Antarctica. However, this building is more than just a center where scientists conduct research. One of the ideas behind the project is to create something like a “home away from home” for people living in the middle of Antarctica.

Because in such a remote part of the world, the concept of “home” begins to mean something different.

Designing a Building in Antarctica

Antarctica is far from an easy place for architecture. Strong winds, heavy snowfall, extremely low temperatures, and difficult transportation conditions mean that before thinking about how a building should look, you first have to think about how it will survive.

For this reason, the station’s form is not simply an aesthetic choice. Its three-part, curved structure is shaped according to the movement of wind and snow. The building is elevated approximately three meters above the ground, allowing wind and snow to move more freely and in a more controlled way around the structure.

In other words, architecture here does not try to fight nature. Instead, it understands how nature behaves and works with it.

 

 

Ice Outside, Life Inside

Perhaps this is one of the most important aspects that distinguishes the project from an ordinary research station.

The building does not contain only laboratories and workspaces. It also includes bedrooms, communal areas, recreational spaces, a gym, and a sauna to support the everyday lives of researchers staying there for extended periods.

Because people here do not simply work for a few hours and return home. They live within this extreme environment for months at a time.

That is why the building is designed to be a living space as much as it is a laboratory.

Warm materials such as wood and textiles used throughout the interior reinforce this feeling. In contrast to the cold and harsh Antarctic landscape outside, the interior creates a warmer and more familiar atmosphere.

A Garden in the Middle of Antarctica

One of the most interesting features of the project is the greenhouse.

Yes, a greenhouse in Antarctica.

Located within the building, this space makes it possible to grow plants. But the greenhouse is more than just a functional area. It also becomes a shared living space where researchers can reconnect with nature.

While the world outside is covered in ice, creating an interior space filled with green plants establishes a powerful contrast.

Perhaps this is one of the elements that best expresses the idea of a “home at the end of the world”: rather than completely disconnecting from nature, bringing nature inside the building.

So, How Does This Building Get to Antarctica?

The story of the project does not end with its design. Even transporting the building to Antarctica is a design challenge in itself.

Since there is no conventional construction infrastructure in the region, the components of the station are prepared in advance. The modular and prefabricated elements are transported to the island by sea and assembled on site.

This means that the design of the building has to adapt to its environment not only physically, but logistically as well.

And this reminds us that architecture does not always begin with the question:

“What can we design here?”

Sometimes the question is much simpler:

“How can we get here, and how can we live here?”

The Henryk Arctowski Research Station demonstrates how architecture can take on a completely different role under extreme conditions.

Here, the building has to protect people from the wind, manage snow, support scientific research, use energy efficiently, and provide a place for people to live—all at the same time.

But beyond all of these requirements, it does not forget something much more human:

Creating a place where people can feel that they belong.

Perhaps that is why this project is more than just a research station.

In the middle of Antarctica, surrounded by ice and endless white landscapes, it presents a small but powerful idea:

Even at the end of the world, people still need a home.
