Trend Alarm: Parametric Design in Architecture
04/03/2022

Design occurs when small forms begin and develop with a sketch and complement each other, forming a whole. With the transition to a digitally supported design, it has become easier to play on the whole and make changes later. As a result of this innovation in the field of design; the parametric design was born, which is more practical to intervene and allows revision compared to the traditional design model.

In parametric design, the orientation of the design occurs depending on the parameters (variables) named after it. In fact, it can be considered a method of managing and organizing work, rather than the design itself.

For example, in a furniture design, the measurement values entered for furniture are counted as one of the parameters that make up the design, and they are connected to each other like the rings of a chain throughout the design. The main thing is that it is manageable, and not the number of parameters. Unlike the traditional design in parametric design, when changing parameters such as the measurement value that you want to change later, you have the opportunity to interfere with the desired section without playing with the entire design. This method easily adapts every change that the designer has in mind to the design, giving him the right to make endless changes to his work and ensuring that he is not restricted.

The Use of Parametric Design in Architecture

In addition to providing convenience and aesthetic elements to the designer, the parametric design also supports the development of a sustainable design understanding. Nowadays, thanks to digitally supported design programs in architecture, architects and industry employees can easily and in many different ways put everything they have in mind on paper. In particular, parametric editing of architectural elements in technical drawing is a stage that moves the design process up and speeds up the project. In this way, the variety of alternative designs is increasing.

In parametric architecture, there are certain parameters that are listed as material parameters, environmental and mathematical parameters, representative parameters, user parameters, topological and geometric parameters. When all this is taken into account when creating a design, it is inevitable that the result will be as the designer wants.

The pioneer of parametric design, in which the use of geometric forms has become quite easy, is Zaha Hadid, who has given a lot of space to geometric patterns in her designs.
