MILAS-BODRUM AIRPORT

Since airports have many services as transportation and transit centers, it is necessary to skillfully solve many systems integrated into each other in transportation structures projects. As with all public structures, it is essential that elements such as safety, practicality and comfort are presented to the user at the maximum level. In this article, we will examine the design details of Milas-Bodrum Airport as a reference project.

History of Milas-Bodrum Airport

Until 1994, the fact that there was only one airport in the region that was used with limited capacity due to geographical conditions created the need for a new airport and the construction of this structure became almost mandatory. despite the fact that its construction began in 1994, its construction could not be continued for technical reasons, and four years later, the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the republic was announced. with its international terminal built for the dec, it has become one of the most important airports in Turkey.

Previously, due to its location, its name was considered to be only Bodrum Airport, but since it is also located within the borders of Milas, it was opened as Milas-Bodrum Airport as a result of the objection of the Milasians.

Due to the fact that the area is a tourist transit point and the terminal buildings cannot meet the increasing passenger traffic, it was decided to develop the project; but the construction process has been prolonged.

Tabanlıoğlu Architecture was chosen as the winner of the competition organized by the State Airports Authority for the design of the international terminal of Milas-Bodrum Airport in 1998.

The construction of the project, which was developed in accordance with changing and developing needs and technical reasons, was started in 2011 and completed in 15 months.

Design and Features

The structure was designed between the existing domestic and international terminals in the guise of a dec, taking into account geographical conditions and location. In addition to functionality, aesthetic elements are also emphasized, which is aimed at increasing comfort in the area. Accordingly, the controlled daylight received from the roofs and facades is used at the optimum level. At the same time, Bodrum's accumulation elements are included throughout the structure and in the design details.

Tabanlıoğlu preferred to use sustainable materials in his building design and included glass and stone applications and ensured that the integrity was not disturbed by carrying his applications inside from the exterior. The columns in the interiors are left in the form of gross concrete, showing a harmonious unity with the simplicity of textured white walls, while aiming for a safe posture.

According to the location and building needs, it is very important that the windows differ according to the facades and that glass is preferred especially. Tabanlıoğlu's application of a small dot film coating used on the exterior windows facing the southern facade was designed to prevent the interior from overheating due to the sun. The film also provides a clear view of the passengers in the area while protecting them from the sun outside.

Tabanlıoğlu emphasized the blue glass tone that has become the symbol of Bodrum in a way that contributes to the integrity of the structure at the check-in counters. While the blue color is indicated with small details in the structure, gray-black is preferred in the marbles and the depth in the area is provided. In addition, his design revealed the difference between decked ceiling panels, to which aluminum pipes are connected like bundles, which belong to him.

At the airport, where passenger comfort is considered at the maximum level, there are also cafeterias where passengers are waiting for their flights by taking advantage of the open air before long flights.

Tabanlioglu notes that they are working out a good scenario for possible crisis moments and possible problems such as fire. The fire cabinets were also exhibited with a decorative appearance by taking a share of the architect's design spirit.

The infirmary and outpatient clinic services, which must be located at important transit points at Milas-Bodrum Airport, are also fully equipped.

Tabanlıoğlu Mimarlık; in accordance with the requirements of functionality, such as user experience design and comfort under one roof by collecting all of the elements that makes a whole, due to its geographical location, which is one of the most important representations of Turkey Milas-Bodrum airport seems to have made a worthy touch. At the same time, this project has also earned Tabanlıoğlu the RIBA International Award given by the United Kingdom Institute of Architecture (RIBA).
