Creative Approaches That Play A Role In Interior Perception
12/02/2024

People are in constant interaction with the spaces they inhabit and perceive their environment through their senses. These perceptions are interpreted together with the knowledge and experiences of the person. Visual perception makes up a large part of this perception and is influenced by design elements in the environment such as form, color, material, texture and light. In this article, we examine the design elements that influence the perception of interiors.

Light and Shadow Play

Light is another important factor that profoundly affects the perception of interior space. Natural light illuminates the atmosphere of a space, while artificial lighting directs the use and feel of the space. Lighting can increase the sense of depth and dimension by playing with shadows or focus attention on specific areas. Thus, through the effective use of light and shadows in interiors, the perception and experience of space can change dramatically.

The Importance of Textural Experiences

Texture is another element that enriches the sensory experience of a space. People interact with textures by touching and feeling them, so different textures used in interiors can increase people's attachment to the space. A rough wall surface, a warm wooden floor or a soft fabric sofa all add to the character and textural richness of a space.

Color Psychology and Space Perception

Colors greatly influence the perception of interiors. Each color causes different emotional reactions. The effects of colors on the human psyche have been researched and it has been proven that one of the first effects of colors is warmth and coldness. Colors close to yellow usually evoke a warm feeling, while colors close to blue give a cold feeling. Colors with a warm effect make people feel closer, while colors with a cold effect make people feel farther away. Architects carefully choose colors in interiors to ensure that the space creates the desired emotional effect.

Blue color, when used in interiors, usually creates a feeling of calmness and peace on people. This color represents trust, sincerity and peace and is believed to have a soothing effect. At the same time, the color blue is also known to create an authoritative air and increase productivity.

Red is one of the most distinctive colors in space design. It evokes a sense of warmth and excitement. While burgundy and dark red tones can sometimes be perceived as overwhelming, bright neon red tones often leave a vibrant impression. This color can also have a diminishing effect on the perception of time.

Orange is a striking color that creates a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. It is important to use orange in a balanced way with other colors, otherwise it can produce undesirable results. Orange is an attention-grabbing color that makes people feel peaceful and encourages creativity.

Yellow is one of the most powerful energizing colors. It has a happy and uplifting effect on people. It can be used in places where energy and positivity are sought. However, its excessive use in interiors can disturb people and leave a visually tiring effect; therefore, it is important to use it carefully.

Green is the distinctive color of nature and often evokes a sense of calm. It has a balanced and rejuvenating effect and can also enhance creativity. When paired with white, light green gives the impression of a sterile environment, which is why it is the most preferred color in clinics.

Black is often associated with mystery, power and seriousness. It can make a space look small and create a closed feeling. However, when used correctly, it can give the impression of elegance and modernity.  It is a striking color, but overuse or misapplication can make the space dark and suffocating.

In the perception of space and architecture, the color white generally evokes a sense of, extensiveness and cleanliness. It creates a bright and open atmosphere. It can help the space appear larger and more spacious. In addition, white color easily harmonizes with other colors and accentuates them. It gives the impression of cleanliness, simplicity and modernity. When overused, it can make the space cold or emotionless. Therefore, it should be used carefully and balanced with other colors.

Interior perception plays an important role in architectural design. Careful selection of colors, lighting, textures and space layout determine people's emotional response to space. Therefore, when architects design interiors, they should consider not only the physical needs but also the emotional needs of people. A well-designed interior not only enhances aesthetic quality, but also improves the mood and quality of life of the users.
